The Bedford Athletic second team remain unbeaten in Counties 2 Eastern Counties following a 43 points to 28 victory at home to Sudbury 2s.
Bedford Athletic started the better of the two sides and took an early lead inside the first ten minutes with tries from James Baker and Tom Bowman both converted by Leo Mortimer. Sudbury showed the meaningfulness of league competition at this level when they levelled the score up with tries from Philip Bagley and Tom Cadeddu both converted by George Dunn to make the score 14 apiece.
Bedford Athletic were still to take the lead into half time with a further converted try from Leo Mortimer to make the score 21-14. Better was to follow early in the second half when Eldon Craven crossed for the bonus point try, Mortimer continuing his exemplary kicking from the tee with the conversion. Jacob Suman appeared to have put the game to bed with a try in the 49th minute but Sudbury fought back with a converted try from winger Alex Smith. Mortimer steadied matters with a penalty in response and the home side entered the final quarter with a 36-21 lead and in control.
There was time for Sudbury to pick up a bonus point try through Sam Green in the 74th minute converted once again by Dunn but Bedford Athletic had the final say when captain Cameron Brough went over on the stroke of full time with Mortimer’s conversion rounding off the win and a personal 18 point haul.
Bedford Athletic 2s take their unbeaten record to Woodbridge this coming Saturday with a 3pm kick off.
