Bedford Athletic 61 Cottenham Renegades 19

The Bedford Athletic second team preserved their unbeaten record at home with a 61 points to 19 victory over Cottenham.

The first half was a much closer contest than the final result suggested. The first score came when a rumbling maul from the home side was held up over the line and when Eldon Craven caught the drop out he was able to run the ball back through the entire visiting defence for the first try of the day converted by Leo Mortimer.

The second try did not arrive until the 38th minute courtesy of Erran Singh-Soomal again converted by Mortimer for a 14-0 half time lead. The scoring was a bit more frequent in the second period, Craven completing his hat trick with tries in the 42nd and 49thminute both converted by Mortimer for a 28-0 lead. It wasn’t until Tom Allwright had dotted down for the home side that Cottenham got on the board with a try for inside centre Harry Mills converted by fly half Tom Procter on 56 minutes, Paul Anderson was the next try scorer for the home side, the only try of the day not converted by Mortimer but Mills replied again for the visitors making the score 40-12 going into the final ten minutes. This is when the floodgates really did open for the home side, Tana Stenson (2) and Jacob Wells scoring three tries between them, all converted by Mortimer until Cottenham had the final say of the day with a converted try by Proctor in the 79th minute.

The result means the side remain in fourth position in Counties Two Eastern Counties in advance of the visit of Thurston in two week’s time to Putnoe Wood with a 2pm kick off.
