In their first ever RFU league match Bedford Athletics’ second team ran out victors by 34 points to 29 against Newmarket in Counties Two Eastern Counties.
In a see-saw match the lead changed hands six times before the home side secured the win. They were on the board inside two minutes as prop forward Richie Ellingham scored with James Mortimer converting but then conceded a penalty and converted try to trail 10-7. Nevertheless on 21 minutes that man Ellingham repeated the trick and Mortimer again converted. Once more the side fell behind to a converted try before the backs got in on the scoring with wing Tana Stenson adding his first of the afternoon, the second following shortly before half time which together with one Mortimer conversion gave the side a 26-17 half time lead and with a try bonus point in the bag. Bedford Athletic then contrived to fall behind again with tries in the 47th and 52nd minutes for their opponents, one being converted before hooker Chris Elliott steadied the ship in the 66th minute with an unconverted try for a 31-29 lead. James Mortimer finished off the scoring for the day with a penalty in the 72ndminute to give the side a five point lead they never surrendered and a winning start to their league campaign.
The side are next in action at home to Crusaders from Norwich in two Saturdaystime.
