Bedford Athletic win final warm up

The last game of pre season before league action commences saw Bedford Athletic victorious 24-19 away to Derby

In a game of four quarters it was Derby who had the early pressure when a break down their right wing saw them set up camp in the visitor’s 22. Several failed clearance attempts later they crossed for the opening try which was converted. Athletic responded before the end of the half with first Morgan Dayes failing to ground the ball over the line having beaten the wide defence and then Stephen Woodhead almost repeating the move but touching down for a 7-5 deficit. The second quarter saw Bedford Athletic create more chances as their forwards punched holes and the backs exploited the space with Steve Smith and Woodhead combining to put Robbie Locke in for the second try which Leo Mortimer converted for a 12-7 half time lead.

The second half saw the visitors slow to clear the ball from the base of a ruck and from the scrum Derby scored again to lead 14-12. A poor period of play for Bedford Athletic saw possession lost from crooked lineout throws and missed penalties to touch. However they began to gain the upper hand in the scrum and eventually a forceful break by centres Smith and Harry Sawford-Smith saw Smith dot down over the line with Mortimer’s conversion making it 19-14. A well judged kick to the corner saw the visitors run the ball out of play and from a catch and drive lineout Derby levelled matters, but Bedford Athletic had the final say as Woodhead danced his way through minimal space down the wing and set up Sawford-Smith for the final try of the day.

The season proper begins on Saturday with Bedford Athletic hosting Sevenoaks at Putnoe Wood with a 3.00 kick off.
