A strong defensive performance laid the foundations for a 31 points to 5 win at Belgrave.
On a difficult afternoon for everyone with players all faced with personal choices as to whether to participate or not, Bedford Athletic ran in 5 tries to maintain their lead in the Midlands One East table over the Christmas period.
The first twenty minutes demanded a solid defensive performance to keep a home side clearly motivated by their own Christmas festivities at bay, but buoyed by their experiences the previous week at Towcestrians, the side’s structure and shape held and they secured a 12-0 half time lead courtesy of tries from Luke Denham and Steve Smith. Felix Mallalieu added a conversion.
In the second half Bedford Athletic were dominant in all areas with the pack performing particularly well led by a man of the match performance from Erran Singh-Soomal who even did a stint at prop for the last 20 minutes. Three further tries ensued, one for Felix Mallalieu and two for Harry Sawford-Smith with Mallalieu adding a further conversion and Leo Mortimer slotting the final conversion when he came off the bench. In the end the dominance of the visiting side was so complete their hosts only scored with the final play of the match.
Bedford Athletic now head into the Christmas break with an eleven point lead over the two teams directly behind them, Derby and Kettering, and a game in hand over Kettering. Their first opponents in the New Year should be Derby at home on Saturday January 8th with a 2.15pm kick off.
