A strong second-half comeback saw Bedford Athletic emerge victorious at Dronfield by 35 points to 25. Trailing 22-15 at halftime the visitors kept their hosts to one score in the second half whilst earning themselves a bonus-point victory.
In the proverbial game of two halves Bedford Athletic found themselves playing up the slope in the first half and struggled for control and shape. Every score was followed by a reply from Dronfield and this lack of structure and focus led to the side trailing at half time.
Playing down the slope in the second half and with a tighter approach to the game the visitors gradually took control. This was significantly helped by the pack wearing down their opponents and dominating both in the scrum and loose play where man of the match Rob Watkins tackled Dronfield to a standstill. With the lineout catch and drive working particularly well there were two tries for hooker Liam Walsh and one for replacement Lewis Sharp. From the backs Stephen Woodhead scored his 8th of the season to go level on tries scored with Harry Sawford-Smith. Leo Mortimer had a good day with the boot kicking three conversions and three penalties for a 15 point haul.
With other results meaning they maintain a 15 point gap at the top of the table Bedford Athletic will take a commanding lead into this coming Saturday’s home game against Kettering at Putnoe Wood which kicks off at 2.15pm.
